Carl Cox on the joys of digital DJing
To watch DJ Carl Cox in action is anything but dull. He works every possible angle from each track.
Cox handles three CDJs and keeps things rolling, throwing tracks in and out of the mix and layering beats, effects and new ideas on the fly.

Once upon a time, about 25 years ago, there was a three-deck wizard. DJ Carl Cox rose from the British rave scene playing pounding sets of techno on three turntables. At the time, Cox's dexterity and skills on the 1s, 2s and 3s was the headline that built his reputation and made him a superstar. Cox said he worked on three decks to extend the tracks he was playing.
"If I played the same records on two turntables and another record on the third, I was creating my own mixes - live," Cox says.
But times have changed. And Cox, recently named No.1 DJ of the past 25 years by dance music bible Mixmag, is still at the forefront. He has embraced technology as a digital DJ.
"We are in a new era of performers now with technology no-one can ignore," he says. "We have to try and make it work for us, not the other way around. Machines will not take over. But, for me, it's about enhancing what I do as a DJ and producer."
Cox still rocks three decks today - but he uses the Pioneer CDJ1000, the industry-standard player for DJs. Lately, Cox has keenly supported Traktor Scratch Pro, a DJ system that allows users to spin digital track collections on vinyl or CD turntables. In short, Cox's three to six hour sets comprise digital music files from his computer.
But, more importantly, Traktor Scratch has allowed Cox to keep the performance energy that made him famous. He also credits Traktor's sound card with giving digital files a warmer, analog feel.
"With Traktor, I can still be the person I am as a DJ," Cox says. "I can have three CD players set up, my computer and a hard drive with my music. I am not playing vinyl any more. It all comes from the computer. But Traktor gives me that original feel as a DJ."
Cox toyed, for a while, with Ableton Live, a software music sequencer. It is a popular DJ tool for composing and arranging. Ableton Live also mixes and layers tracks flawlessly.
"I felt lazy with Ableton," Cox says. “I couldn't go out as this big international DJ knowing I could open my laptop, push a button and say, 'There you go'."
Cox says the exactness and precision of Ableton is great for production. But he no longer uses it to DJ.
"I'm clinical in what I do, but there is still a roughness to the Carl Cox sound. If it's too clinical, too smooth - that's not me," he says, laughing."
Cox loops, cuts and edits on Traktor Scratch. Importantly, he smiles through the entire, unrelenting process. "I've embraced all this," Cox says. "Much as I loved lugging my records around and the needle jumping and the (speaker) feedback - those days are gone. I'm very happy to do what I do as a DJ, but with a completely new energy to when I started.
To be on a computer, playing music in this domain, is exciting."

Beni G uspješan je DJ/turntablist i producent, ali i tih i precizan ubojica plesnih podija čija životna priča počinje sasvim bezazleno. Maleni Ben od ranih dana počinje s klasičnom glazbenom naobrazbom svirajući violinu, no stvari se potpuno mijenjaju krajem 80ih kada mu pamet pomućuju acid house i rave scena te mu ubrzo oštri rezovi i vinili zamijenjuju violinu. Nakon godina brušenja nemilosrdnih rezova kroz breakbeat, hardcore i jungle plesne podije, otkriva hip hop, no putem nitko nije prošao bez scratcha (ogrebotine).
1997. uz kolegu DJ Go-a osniva jedan od najčuvenijih britanskih DJ kolektiva The Mixologists te u narednih nekoliko godina kao team 2 puta osvajaju UK DMC, tri su godine zaredom u top 3 na World DMC natjecanju, te osvajaju i I.T.F. European natjecanje. Beni se 2006. udružuje u zločinu i sa drugim kolegom, “perverznim grebatorom“ Plus Oneom (Scratch Perverts) s kojim osniva etiketu, ali također tvori i ubojiti produkcijski dvojac pod aliasom Jack Beats.
Bilo kao Beni G ili kao Jack Beats, usluge njegovog hladnog reza koriste Mark B & Blade te Jenna G, na mjestima zločina je često identificiran s imenima kao što su Eminem, Pharoahe Monch, Kool Herc, Jazzy Jeff, Mark Ronson, Craze, Stereo MC's, a u nedjelima je surađivao sa top zlikovcima sa scene kao što su Kano, Skibadee, Killa Kela, Bugz in the Attic, Chase & Status, Fallacy, Sinden, Deekline & Wizard te Plan B čiji je i prateći DJ te stalni član “bande“.
Raznoliko i bogato glazbeno zaleđe urodilo je korištenjem svih žanrovskih rekvizita u jednom setu te je Beni prepoznat kao jedan od pionira tzv. “mash up“ stila DJ-inga, kojim spaja razne žanrove od hip hopa ili drum'n'bassa preko Bmorea, grimea, housea, broken beata i booty bassa, pa sve do dancehalla, 80ih ili rocka, uz duboke i oštre ogrebotine i rezove kojih nitko nije pošteđen.

Preneseno sa www.index.hr"SVAKU drugu policijsku prijavu za zloporabu opojnih droga tijekom 2008. godine istarska su tužiteljstva odbacivala, a najčešći razlog za to bila je takozvana beznačajnost kaznenog djela. Ovakva statistika pokazuje da je istarska županija 'de facto' napravila ono o čemu se godinama u javnosti raspravlja, odnosno dekriminalizirala posjedovanje lakih droga", piše Novi list navodeći kako je sud u Istri od 1630 kaznenih prijava odbacio njih 810.
Beznačajno kazneno djelo
Iz statistike se da zaključiti kako istarski tužitelji gotovo sve prijave za posjedovanje droge karakteriziraju kao beznačajno kazneno djelo. Gotovo istu statistiku kao i Istra ima još i sud u Dubrovniku gdje je od 500 slučajeva odbačeno njih 251 uz jednu bizarnu anegdotu.
Naime sutkinja Kate Tripković odlučila je ne samo kako neće kazniti francuske turiste s dva grama hašiša, već im je vratila hašiš, pozivajući se na Zakon o prekršajima gdje stoji da se "privremeno oduzeti predmeti vraćaju osobi od koje su oduzeti".

Mike Truman, Chris Healings and Lee Mullins are Hybrid, a Swansea-based collective with designs on the future of music. Truman, Healings and Mullins met while clubbing in Swansea (Wales, the UK). They bonded over Truman's house remix of Pink Floyd's ³Another Brick in the Wall², and they've been doing DJ sets and mixing their own music ever since.
"We want to make music that will last," says Mullins. "Something that isn't disposable, something that people will want to listen to over and over again."

Biography:
Robert’s musical career starts out quite exceptionally and indeed rather fabulously in the early 90s. Right after the phenomenon of Chicago and deep house, techno began to establish itself as a brand new and totally original part of youth culture.
Those who are following Robert’s career over the years, know that his sound and the standard of his productions reach almost audiophile standards. No surprise then that many well known artists like Martinez, Minilogue or Gabriel Ananda request his special abilities for mastering their productions.
In the last few years the amount of people producing really good techno, acid, minimal and everything in between is increasing.
The majority of these producers are new, but Robert Babicz (aka Rob Acid) is an example of an older producer that has managed to stay relevant by reinventing his sound (to some extent).

The Frankfurt based producer is following up his hyped EPs on Raum Musik and his own Deep Vibes imprint with a superb debut EP for Drumpoet, delivering the percussive track "Annihilating Rhythm" exploring the low end of the frequency spectrum and "DEep" remixed by Samuel Davis. Welcome along to the latest release of Zurich based label Drumpoet Community. Sascha Dive is an upcoming young producer from Frankfurt, Germany. He released already various 12"es on labels like Raum Musik, Alphabet City and his own Deep Groove Records and gained much attention by well known DJs. With DEep he created a huge dancefloor tune which shines in the mix of the mysterious Samuel Davis from Detroit. DEep created a big buzz among DJs like Efdemin, Prosumer, Serafin and many others. The "Annihilating Rhythm" is also a great tool which works extremely well to build an afrocentric moment in a club. It is the sound of the moment, minimal at it's best because it approaches the basic groove of house music and it's really swinging, not like the usual non-sense hopping music which is featured by lots of the big DJs in Techno. We can definitely say that the future looks bright for Sascha Dive. His music has a slightly minimal approach but never forgets the Funk and is taking the whole movement to new levels.

Then he packed his stuff and moved to fascinating Paris, where he lives since 7 years now exploring for 4 years the electronic sound at the French capital.
A wide range of classical music background like 10 years of playing piano, jazz and blues formation, as well a few years of percussions gave him the feedback to work on electronic music composition.
He always tries to find a personal groove when it comes to his music. His interest in the modern house and techno started with the discovery of the Perlon's crew. With influences like Pantytec, Zip, Melchior, Cabanne, Ricardo Villalobos,…show us two different sides in Seuil's music : dark rolling basses along with modern shaking house, but always with the same groovy spirit, shake it ! to note that he is always inspired by his parisians friends that he collaborates quite often to give more noises for the dance floor. After couples of remixes on Adjunct, Leftroom, Rrygular, Stock 5, Seuil had one track on the minibar compilation (milkshake 01), and on the Lessizmore compilation…
He had a new ep on minibar coming soon…, the « deep hook » ep his planned for spring on Lomidhigh Organic..a remix for Gumption is on the way too, a new ep on Eklo,..and some other news soon...
In 2008, he follows the story with Eklo his own label ,hosting on wax new artists in the family like Laps, dOP, Skat, Posh… as well as his own creations. Even if Seuil live act used to be new everytime….For 2008 everything was managed to be fresh new music...

Since more than a 13 Years now, The
Timewriter aka Jean F. Cochois is respected as one of the top producers within the international House scene. His trademark style can be characterised by his dense and atmospheric sound which is based on sophisticated musicality and thoughtful profundity that goes far beyond dancefloors and mere entertainment. Under various pseudonyms, the best known of which is The Timewriter, he has been releasing 12inches and 8 artist albums on such renowned labels as Plastic City, Mole Listening Pearls, Elektrolux and American labels such as Wave Music, Fiji, as well as on Driftwood or Tonika, both Labels he founded with his good mate Norman Feller.

www.myspace.com/djgregwilson Greg Wilson was one of the first DJs in the UK to mix two records together. He was a resident at the legendary Wigan Pier in the 1970's and 80's. And in 1983 he became the first DJ to host a weekly dance music night at Manchester's Hacienda.
Greg was also the first DJ to mix live on British TV
He stopped DJing in 1984, but picked up his headphones again in 2003, playing at the likes of The Electric Chair, Fabric and Basics to widespread acclaim.

Kako je sve počelo? Tresor je počeo sa radom početkom 1991. godine, dvije godine nakon pada berlinskog zida - pronađen je savršen prostor za stvaranje novog glazbenog vala. Tresor je u oko 1920. god. bio poznati trgovački centar, njegovo podzemlje sa čeličnim šipkama i valovitim hodnicima, savršeno je predstavljalo apokaliptičnu atmosferu do tada malo poznate techno glazbe.
Ključ uspjeha je bilo povezivanje sa techno umjetnicima iz Detroita, njihova gostovanja u Tresoru početkom devedesetih, zajedno sa njemačkim djima (Maurizio, Paul Van Dyk, Dr. Motte, Tanith...) najavljivala su stvaranje nove globalne glazbene scene. Krajem 91’ osniva se izdavačka kompanija Tresor Records i već njihovo drugo izdanje ima naziv “Berlin Detroit – A Techno Alliance”. Umjetnici iz Detroita poput kultnih Undergroud Resistance (Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, Robert Hood), Juan Atkinsa, Blake Baxtera stvarali su povijest svakim svojim gostovanjem u Tresoru.
U svojih četrnaest godina rada u Tresoru je gostovalo mnogo umjetnika, klub je u domeni elektronske glazbe postao jedan od svjetski najpoznatijih i svakako najutjecajnih mjesta.
16. travnja 2005. Tresor zatvara svoja vrata , u potrazi je novo mjesto za stvaranje novih promjena.
Ipak, izdavačka kompanija Tresor records uspješno nastavlja sa svojim radom...
Osnivač Tresora u Berlinu, Dimitri Hegemann najavio je otvorenje ovog kluba na lokaciji stare elektrane u Berlinu za 7. ožujka 2007 Stara elektrana u Berlinu ima 4 kata i ukupno 20.000 kvadratnih metara. Budući da se radi o zaista velikom prostoru Dimitri je odlučio podijeliti ga u nekoliko sekcija.
U toj podjeli klub Tresor dobio je mršavih 5% ukupne površine. Tako će se osim partija tamo događati i velike izložbe umjetnina. Tijekom iducih mjeseci u planu je napraviti i otvoriti lokaciju za dnevne posjete izložbama.

http://www.myspace.com/lajuliettaWhen Julietta discovered the first House parties in the early nineties, Moodymann and Maurizio were two of the producers who captivated her so strongly that she began digging for electronic music by herself. Regularly she remained in miscellaneous record shops, always in search for some new chicago house and detroit records - at that time still without any dj ambitions. She did an interstation at the radio, where she moderated one of the first shows for electronic music throughout south germany. At the end of the nineties she had her first gig at the legendary Ultraschall in Munich, where she was offered a residency straight away.
She always was an activist in Munich nightlife and over the years she already gained an excellent reputation far beyond the German borders - at renowned venues like for instance Panoramabar (Berlin), Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), Colors Studio (Tokyo), Zukunft (Zurich), Flex (Vienna), Club 11 (Amsterdam), KamaKama (Italy), Cocoon (Frankfurt) as well as festivals like Love Parade or Sonnemondsterne. In the meantime, after almost 100 gigs worldwide in the year 2007, she counts besides the famous Harry Klein an increasing number of resident clubs in Europe.
Her style varies somewhere between House and Techno with all its facets and stands out with a mind-blowing mixture of rare old and modern tracks. she has a specific intuition for the right record on the dancefloor, where she manages to build a set that hooks the listener until the last record.
